Jiro raw bar and Grill.

Jiro is a funky Sushi bar and restaurant space established by four ambitious sisters to celebrate their shared love of all things Sushi. The sisters searched all over Bangkok, scouring the streets in search of the best flavours they could find. They took all the best bits and took note of the not so good bits and they incorporated this into their own business concepts, rolling the key ingredients together into one combination perfect sushi.

Following their market research and based on their own ideals- the sisters had a vision for Jiro that it would be more of a take your time to sit down and eat type of restaurant as during their previous experiences they often felt rushed.

Jiro raw bar and grill is just a walk away from terminal 21 at BTS Asoke. Located at the Manhattan Hotel on Sukhumvit 15, the restaurant is somewhat hidden from the main drag, however it is not hard to find. The al-fresco themed space is stylish and modern, with a minimalist design and quirky garden furniture which works in harmony with the super chilled setting here.

If you like a selection of Sushi you will be impressed with the extensive photo menu at Jiro, which features many sushi and Sashimi favourites as well as Udon noodles, soups, salads and a number of unique fusion dishes. At Jiro the emphasis is placed on the dining experience and the quality and presentation of the product on the plate. The prices here maybe slightly higher than elsewhere in Bangkok but the portions are generous and the quality of the fish which is delivered from Japan twice weekly ensures the quality is consistently good.

The beverage list at Jiro is also less modestly priced and wine can only be bought by the bottle, however you can enjoy a range of drinks to accompany your meal. Choose from a selection of beers, wines, sparkling and traditional Japanese Saki (rice wine) and make the most of the 20% wine discount and 10% off Saki.

Recommended at Jiro raw bar and grill is the Jiro signature ‘Warm Breeze’ a huge portion of Tyu Toro; a supreme cut of Tuna belly, layered with O-Toro; deliciously fatty chunks of meat, Akami (a leaner cut) and topped off with Uni (sea urchin) paste, quails egg yolk the finest sturgeon roe caviar. This dish is a bit of a mouthful but it was sophisticatedly presented and beautifully dressed, resulting in a combination of textures and fresh flavours of the raw fish.

The new menu offers exciting sounding plates such as the ‘Salmon Volcano’ Te Maki rolls with tempura prawn or Uramaki ( an inside out sushi piece with rice on the outside) with seared salmon, Hotate (Japanese shellfish) and red caviar, surrounded by light and crispy tempura batter and drizzled with a not so spicy volcano dressing. This modern fusion is full of bold colours, flavours and textures, and it certainly looks impressive on the plate, non the less it didn’t really live up to its name due to the absence of fiery heat!

Inspired by the alfresco concept and garden theme, try the Garden Rolls at 520THB per set. These green rolls are tightly packed with Tamako, topped with eel and sprinkled with green seaweed flakes, and can be enjoyed with a fresh root wasabi which is not as overpowering as the dried version.

If you want to try something new which was created by the girls themselves, try the interesting combination of Hamachi (Yellowtail), avocado, fois gras and cream cheese, topped with salmon roe and a peanut butter sauce. These rich and creamy rolls are dominantly flavoured by the frois Gras but complimented by the sweet, nutty sauce and finished with the delightful sensation of the juicy caviar bursting in the mouth.
